25 Apr Sub-Ohm Vaping – The Complete Guide
What is Sub-Ohm Vaping?
What is sub-ohm vaping? Simply put it is vaping on a device whose atomizer coils have a resistance of less than one ohm. The reason some advanced vapers “sub-ohm” is to increase the power output of fixed voltage devices like mechanical vape mods and non-variable regulated devices to create more vapor or flavor. In other words, it’s for smokers who want big-ass clouds!
Although it might sound simple it’s actually a complex and often controversial topic within the vaping community. I was not clear on the what or why’s about sub-ohm vaping, so decided to write this article to share what I found. Overall it’s for extreme vaping folks, but can be very helpful for everyone to read. Also, we’ll throw in some sub-ohm product recommendations.
How Does Sub-Ohm Vaping Work?
All mechanical mods, and e-cigarettes are electrical devices powered by a battery. Sub-ohm vaping utilizes the principles of Ohm’s and Joule’s laws of electricity (I=V/R), where I is the current through the conductor in units of amperes, V is the voltage measured across the conductor in units of volts, and R is the resistance of the conductor in units of ohms. So, you see if you want more current you either have to increase voltage or decrease resistance. Well, since it’s a battery it’s a non-variable source of power the best option is to reduce resistance (ohm’s) – hence sub-ohm vaping has greater current – giving those bonsai hits.
Since you’re increasing current I’m sure you can imagine sub-ohm vaping must be done safely. As you decrease your resistance you will increase the amperage your device uses to supply the current needed. This increases the strain on the battery and also increases heat that the battery and coils generate. For this reason you must ensure that you never exceed the amperage limit of your battery or it could fail causing possible fire or explosion.
Sub-Ohm Safety: Mechanical Mods
To ensure safe performance you will want to always make sure you keep your mechanical vape mod clean. This includes all threads, vent holes, contacts, and the switch. If using a spring loaded switch be sure to take notice of how stiff it feels, if over time your spring seems to be getting softer or feels easier to press it is beginning to “sag” or wear out and needs replaced before it fails. If you are going to replace your spring in your switch you should strongly consider upgrading to magnets. You will also want to be sure that you use your mods locking mechanism when it is not in use. When selecting a mechanical mod for sub-ohm vaping there are a few things to consider. You will want to select a mod that is well vented. These vents allow heat to escape from normal use but also allow gases to vent in case of battery failure.
How do I Sub Ohm?
In the past, if you wanted to Sub Ohm this would first require buying a Mechanical or Box Mod that uses rechargeable 18650 batteries, Kanthal wire and organic cotton for wicking. A desire to get into how ohm’s law works, and how to create coils, etc., were probably necessary. But today you simply purchase of a Sub Ohm Tank and pretty much any Mod on the market that that is 30 watts or higher, such as

Is Sub-Ohm Vaping Right for You?
Sub-ohm vaping, as mentioned, is for those who like the powerful big clouds of smoke. But it’s not for everyone. If you fall into these categories you may not enjoy it….
- Discrete Vapers – Many people vape as a way to get their nicotine fix without having to actually smoke cigarettes. Sub Ohm vaping is obvious from 50 feet away, and is not in the least bit discrete. Those who hate smokers will really hate you, so it’s probably not the best choice for you.
- Mouth to Lung Smokers – If you’re wanting a similar experience to conventional smoking sub ohm vaping may not be for you. This is just too big a drag if you go straight to the lungs, inhaling all that smoke.
- Juice Mizers – This method uses a ton or product, and if you’re not wanting to use up so much juice you may get tired of this. Sub Ohm vaping will require larger quantities of e-liquid which will cost more money than your standard setup. FSub Ohm vaping just might not be in your budget if looking to save money.
It’s not right for everyone, but could be very satisfying and fun for you. Don’t just follow trends – before you start vaping sub-ohm please consider that most sub-ohm vapers are experienced and know a lot about the products and safety. If it doesn’t sound like you want to test it slowly and safely perhaps wait and consider a high powered VV / VW regulated mod instead.
